Zelensky says Russia is willing to negotiate on peace deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken of a change in Moscow's position as his people continue to battle against a Russian invasion of their country.

Kiev, 13 March 2022 (dpa/MIA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken of a change in Moscow’s position as his people continue to battle against a Russian invasion of their country.

“Now they have started talking about something, and not just giving ultimatums,” he told international journalists in Kiev on Saturday.

The 44-year-old said he was pleased that Russia appeared open to dialogue for the first time in over two years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had already spoken of movement in the peace efforts on Friday. Russian negotiators reported “certain positive changes” in the talks, which were being held “practically every day.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax agency that the talks were now being held online. Ukraine confirmed this.

According to the Unian news agency, Zelensky sees the involvement of Ukraine’s Western partners in the negotiations as insufficient. Regarding security guarantees for his country, he said Ukraine could no longer “trust Russia after such a bloody war.”
