New York, 28 September 2022 (dpa/MIA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia’s plan to annex occupied Ukrainian territory after a series of referendums pits Russian President Vladimir Putin against all of humanity.
A clear signal against Russian annexation was now needed from every country in the world, Zelensky said. He called any illegal annexation a crime against all states.
Referendums have been held over five days in the four partially Russian-occupied areas of Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhya. Ukraine and other countries have decried them as ‘sham’ votes.
UN Secretary General António Guterres recently described any possible annexation of the areas as a violation of international law.
