WHO concerned about falling coronavirus test numbers

Geneva, 23 May 2022 (dpa/MIA) — The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about the sharp decline in coronavirus testing.

WHO databases are receiving less and less information on infections and the gene sequencing of detected viruses, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Tuesday.

“This makes us increasingly blind to patterns of transmission and evolution,” Tedros said.

“But this … virus won’t go away just because countries stop looking for it. It’s still spreading, it’s still changing, and it’s still killing,” Tedros said.

The threat of a dangerous new variant of the virus developing continues to be real, he said.

Last week, just over 15,000 deaths were reported to WHO following a coronavirus infection, he said. That was the lowest number since March 2020, Tedros said, calling it a welcome trend.
