US: Zelensky ‘prime target for Russian aggression’

The US Department of State has said it believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be a "prime target for Russian aggression."

Washington, 25 February 2022 (dpa/MIA) — The US Department of State has said it believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be a “prime target for Russian aggression.”

“President Zelensky does in many ways represent, even personify, the democratic aspirations and ambitions of Ukraine, of Ukrainian people. So of course, he would remain a prime target for Russian aggression,” spokesman Ned Price told CNN.

Price went on to say that US authorities had been saying for weeks that Russian agents had already infiltrated Ukraine and were “operating inside the country.”

Zelensky echoed the US in comments in Kyiv.

“We have information that the enemy has declared me target number one, and my family target number two,” he said in a video message.

He said there were false reports he had left Kyiv.

“I am staying in the capital, staying with my people,” he said.

He said he was not allowed to say exactly where he was staying.
