Spain defeat France to become EuroBasket champions for fourth time

Reigning world champions Spain are European champions for the fourth time after a 88-76 win over France on Sunday in Berlin.

Berlin, 19 September 2022 (dpa/MIA) — Reigning world champions Spain are European champions for the fourth time after a 88-76 win over France on Sunday in Berlin.

Coach Sergio Scariolo’s team defeated Olympic silver medallist France to capture the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 title in part thanks to a brilliant performance by Juancho Hernangomez, who led all scorers in the decider with 27 points, including seven of nine threes from behind the arc.

Juancho’s older brother, Willy Hernangomez, scored 14 as did US-born Lorenzo Brown in front of over 13,000 spectators at the Arena Berlin.

France was led by Evan Fournier with 23 points, including four of eight three pointers, while fellow NBA player Rudy Gobert had a quiet game with six points, six rebounds and two blocks.

For Spain, this was the first tournament since the end of the Gasol brothers era, as both Marc and Pau retired from the national team after playing in the Tokyo Olympics.

Playmakers Ricky Rubio and Sergio Llull were also absent for Spain from the title fight in Berlin.

The Iberians had previously won gold at the European Championships in 2009, 2011 and 2015. France’s only European Championship title dates back to 2013.
