Berlin, 11 December 2021 (dpa/MIA) – Germany’s new chancellor, Olaf Scholz, spoke on the phone on Friday with US President Joe Biden, who congratulated him on his appointment.
German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said the two leaders reaffirmed the close ties between Berlin and Washington, while expressing intent to further strengthen the allies’ bond.
They had agreed that the transatlantic friendship was indispensable for overcoming current and future challenges, Hebestreit added.
The White House said in a statement that Biden had emphasized his support for a “robust relationship” with Germany and for further strengthening transatlantic cooperation.
The two discussed global challenges such as climate change and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as Russia’s troop build-up on its border with Ukraine, according to the White House.
Scholz and Biden already met on Thursday during an online “summit for democracy” hosted by the United States.
