Paris to plant 170,000 trees to improve the city’s climate

Paris, 16 October 2021 (dpa/MIA) – Paris has for years been one of the conurbations with excessive air pollution. Now, the French capital wants to improve the city’s climate by planting 170,000 new trees.

Additional trees are to be planted wherever there is still space, along the streets, on squares, in parks and also on the embankments of the city’s ringroad motorway, the city administration announced.

The aim is to combat climate change. The trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), improve the quality of the air and contribute to cooling the city during summer heat waves. In addition, trees are a natural barrier to noise and visual pollution, which promotes the health of Parisians and reduces stress.

Paris is already one of the most tree-rich capitals in Europe, the city administration stressed. There are around 200,000 trees in the city itself, and another 300,000 in the urban forests of Boulogne and Vincennes.

The additional trees are to be planted by 2026. In the first planting season 2020-21, almost 14,000 young trees were already added. The city operates its own tree nursery for this purpose.

Fewer than 1.5 per cent of the trees will have to be felled for safety reasons, it said. Since 2014, Paris has been monitoring its tree population with an automated system; each tree has its own digital ID card and is inspected annually. On average, the trees along the streets are no older than 80 years.

That the effort for a better climate in Paris is urgently needed was made clear by the French Council of State in the summer. It fined the state millions for excessive air pollution in several metropolises, including Paris.
