National football team draws in Iceland, squanders two-goal lead

The national football team drew 2:2 with Iceland after squandering a two-goal lead in the final stages of the World Cup qualifier in Reykjavik on Sunday evening.

Reykjavik, 6 September 2021 (MIA) – The national football team drew 2:2 with Iceland after squandering a two-goal lead in the final stages of the World Cup qualifier in Reykjavik on Sunday evening.

The Macedonian footballers dominated the match and scored through Darko Velkovski in the 12th minute and Ezgjan Alioski in the 54th.

However, Iceland got one goal back after Brynjar Ingi Bjarnason scored in the 78th minute, with Andri Gudjohnsen leveling the match in the 84th.

In the Group J other matches, Germany thrashed Armenia 6:0, while Romania beat Liechtenstein 2:0. Germany tops the standings with 12 points, followed by Armenia with 10, Romania (9), North Macedonia (8), Iceland (4) and Liechtenstein (0).

On Wednesday, North Macedonia hosts Romania, needing a win to boost its chances for World Cup qualification.
