Moscow: All Ukrainian fighters at Azovstal plant have surrendered

Russian troops are in full control of the Azovstal steelworks and all Ukrainian fighters that had been holed up there have surrendered, the Defence Ministry in Moscow said on Friday night.

Moscow, 20 May 2022 (dpa/MIA) – Russian troops are in full control of the Azovstal steelworks and all Ukrainian fighters that had been holed up there have surrendered, the Defence Ministry in Moscow said on Friday night.

The sprawling industrial site in the port city of Mariupol was encircled shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

As Russian troops gradually took control of the strategic city on the Sea of Azov through relentless aerial bombardments and a blockade, Ukrainian defenders took cover in the Azovstal plant, which features an underground network of bunkers and tunnels.

In what amounted to an admission of defeat, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared the two-month long battle for the last contested piece of Mariupol over at the start of the week, paving the way for the Ukrainian troops to be taken prisoner by the Russians.

A total of 2,439 Ukrainian combatants have been taken into Russian captivity since May 16, according to the ministry.
