Lukashenko says war only possible if West attacks Russia or Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said he considers a war in Europe to be possible, but only if Belarus or Russia are subjected to military aggression.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said he considers a war in Europe to be possible, but only if Belarus or Russia are subjected to military aggression.

“Will there be a war or not?” Lukashenko asked rhetorically during an address to the nation on Friday before answering: “Yes, there will be. But only in two cases. If direct aggression is committed against Belarus. And secondly … if our ally Russia is directly attacked.”

Lukashenko is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Moscow and Minsk are planning joint military exercises in Belarus in February, which has caused concern in the West given the current tensions over Ukraine.

The manoeuvre is planned to take place in the south of Belarus near the Ukrainian border. The US State Department has expressed concern that Moscow could station troops in Belarus under the cover of the manoeuvres and launch an attack on Ukraine from there.
