Amsterdam, 29 September 2021 (dpa/MIA) – A local politician in the Netherlands was temporarily detained over an alleged threat to Prime Minister Mark Rutte, local media reported on Tuesday,
The man, a lawmaker in the city legislature in The Hague, was detained on Sunday on the basis of “suspicious behaviour,” news agency ANP cited a spokesman for the prosecution as saying.
The public prosecutor’s office suspects the politician of trying to “obtain information in order to prepare a serious crime.” He was released on Monday, but remains under investigation.
What exactly he is supposed to have done is not known. The man used to attract attention with right-wing populist remarks. He later converted to Islam and is now a member of an Islamic party in The Hague.
The prime minister’s personal protection had already been strengthened before the incident. Judicial authorities justified this with evidence of a threat from organized crime.
