Russia’s FSB security agency said on Monday it had detained a Japanese consul in the far eastern city of Vladivostok on suspicion of espionage.

The member of the Japanese consulate in the Pacific port city was caught “red-handed” receiving classified information about the impacts of the West’s sanctions policy, among other topics, in exchange for a payment.

The diplomat was further declared persona non grata and told to leave Russia within 48 hours.

The FSB said there was video of the consul’s interrogation in which he admitted to breaking Russian laws.
