Tel Aviv, 22 November 2021 (dpa/MIA) – More than 50 arrests of suspected Hamas members have been carried out by the security forces in the West Bank in recent weeks, the Israeli domestic intelligence service Shin Bet announced on Monday.
The intelligence agency claims to have uncovered a Hamas terrorist network and also reported the seizure of cash, weapons and items needed for the production of explosives.
The members of the “dangerous network which planned a series of serious attacks” were planning more violence against Israelis, a Shin Bet statement said, adding that the planned attacks were financed and directed by senior Hamas members living abroad.
In an attack in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, a Hamas shooter killed one Israeli and injured four others. The shooter, who was from the Arab-majority eastern part of Jerusalem, was shot dead at the site by security forces.
The funeral of the Israeli victim, a 26-year-old immigrant from South Africa who worked as a tour guide at the Wailing Wall, was attended by thousands of people in Jerusalem on Monday.
