Tel Aviv, 18 June 2022 (dpa/MIA) — Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket at Israel on Friday night for the first time in almost two months, with the projectile intercepted by the country’s missile defense system.
According to the military, the Israeli air force subsequently attacked Hamas targets including a weapons factory and three Hamas military posts.
Sirens had sounded in the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon shortly before.
There were no reports of casualties on either side.
The Gaza Strip border region has been mostly peaceful for the past two months.
However, in the occupied West Bank, Israeli military operations have been met with repeated clashes following a wave of terrorist acts in Israel.
On Friday, three Palestinians were killed in confrontations with the Israeli army in the northern West Bank.
In the Gaza Strip, about two million inhabitants live in very poor conditions. Hamas seized power by force in 2007. Israel then tightened a blockade of the coastal area, which is supported by Egypt. Both states justify the measure citing security interests.
