Iraq says it arrested aide to late Islamic State leader al-Baghdadi

Iraqi intelligence services have arrested a close aide of former Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said on Monday.

Iraqi intelligence services have arrested a close aide of former Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said on Monday.

Sami Jasim Muhammad al-Jaburi was arrested outside Iraq, al-Kadhimi said, without giving details.

Intelligence services “were conducting a complex external operation to capture Sami Jasim, who was in charge of Daesh finance, and a deputy of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi,” al-Kadhemi wrote on Twitter.

Daesh is an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

The military-linked Security Media Cell posted a picture reportedly of al-Jaburi, an Iraqi national, following his arrest.

In 2015, the US Treasury Department designated al-Jaburi for providing financial support or other services to the extremist group.

It said he supervised Islamic State’s finance, oil and gas, antiquities, and mineral resources operations. In August of 2014, al-Jaburi was second in command in Iraq’s city of Mosul.

The Iraqi government declared military victory over Islamic State in December 2017 – three years after the militia seized large swathes in the northern part of the country.

Islamic State operatives, however, continue to carry out attacks and kidnappings across Iraq.

Al-Baghdadi was killed in 2019 during an operation by US special forces in Syria.
