European Commission: More for Ukraine to do in fighting corruption

The European Commission welcomed Ukraine's investigation into corruption allegations but underlined "more progress will need to be made going forward," a spokesperson said.

Brussels, 24 January 2023 (dpa/MIA) – The European Commission welcomed Ukraine’s investigation into corruption allegations but underlined “more progress will need to be made going forward,” a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson did not comment on the growing list of government resignations in Ukraine linked to a corruption probe.

She stressed however anti-corruption measures are an important condition for ongoing financial support, as well as future membership of the European Union.

The commission is in close contact with Kiev to ensure aid sent to Ukraine has “guarantees that funds are being used to good use,” the spokesperson said.

Despite the unfolding controversy, and a critical report on corruption in Ukraine from the EU’s top budget watchdog, the commission defended the country’s progress so far.
