Cairo, 6 August 2022 (dpa/MIA) – Egypt has proposed a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad faction in Gaza, an Egyptian security source has said.
The proposal was made after the worst violence since 2021 erupted Friday between Israelis and Palestinians, the source told dpa.
An Egyptian team is getting ready to travel to Israel and Gaza to work for de-escalation, the source added without further details.
Egypt said early Saturday in a Foreign Ministry statement it was intensifying its contacts to “contain the situation” in Gaza.
Egypt often acts as a mediator in the conflict between Israel and Palestinians.
Last year, Cairo brokered a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas, which rules Gaza.
The ceasefire ended 11 days of fighting with the enclave.
