EBRD’s Rigterink for MIA: Partial recovery in 2021, with GDP growth of 4.0%

A partial recovery of North Macedonia's economy is expected in 2021, with GDP growth of 4.0 percent keeping its momentum in 2022, Jürgen Rigterink, First Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, told MIA in an interview. Noting that high level of vaccination and continued support for most vulnerable households and businesses would help avoid the worst consequences of the pandemic, he said the country in the medium term needs to accelerate education reforms and create more jobs for young people; keep a high level of public investment and develop the transport and energy infrastructure; and take steps toward the planned phase-out of coal-based power generation, replacing it with renewables.
