Chinese authorities lock down another major city due to virus cases

Beijing, 9 February 2022 (dpa/MIA) – Chinese authorities have imposed a lockdown in another major city after several cases of Covid-19 were identified, as Beijing continues to pursue a “zero Covid” policy through strict measures.

Residents of Baise, a city of 3.6 million in south-western China, have been instructed not to leave their homes, according to local media. Transport links in and out of the city have also largely been halted.

The rules were introduced after officials found more than 100 cases of the coronavirus over the weekend.

Similar lockdowns have been introduced in Xi’an and Anyang, also major cities, in recent months.

These measures have enabled China to largely halt the spread of infection throughout the pandemic, compared to other countries.

The more transmissible Omicron strain is proving challenging, however. Outbreaks have been reported in several cities but have been contained so far.

Olympics organizers reported just five new coronavirus cases related to the Beijing Winter Games in their Wednesday report.

The newly infected people included three athletes or team members.

They were detected after about 70,000 coronavirus tests were carried out on Tuesday.

All participants are completely separated from the general Chinese population – this includes everyone from athletes to journalists.

To detect infections as quickly as possible, every participant in the loop must take a daily test.

The new figures bring the total number of Covid-19 infections detected at the Beijing Winter Games to 398 since Jan. 23.
