From October 1 onwards, only those people who have a valid coronavirus pass will be allowed into the Vatican, the Holy See announced on Monday.

Every resident, employee or visitor to the Papal State must use the pass to prove vaccination against Covid-19, recovery from the virus or a negative test, it said.

The EU coronavirus passport, a Vatican “green passport” or other foreign certificates are valid, the Vatican said, while announcing there would be entry checks carried out by its own gendarmerie corps.

An exception to the new rules applies only to those times when believers attend Masses and liturgical celebrations at the Vatican. However, they are urged to follow the hygiene rules.

With its decree, the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State followed an instruction from Pope Francis to ensure the safety and health of the people in the Papal State.
